“Making safer cars is relatively easy compared to ensuring people to buy safe cars,” said the ASEAN NCAP Secretary-General while meeting at his office on 3 July 2015. “A few years back and today still, pricing plays a major factor when purchasing a car, yet safety concerns are growing especially in Malaysia and Thailand,” he added.
ASEAN NCAP today releases Star vs. Price Chart of cars available in Malaysia. Starting from 2012, ASEAN NCAP has assessed various car models and provided consumer information regarding vehicle safety aspects. Although mobility is vital in some ASEAN countries, sustainable mobility is the most appropriate concept to apply for safer and greener future. Khairil added that mobility is not only moving people and goods from point A to point B, but how to make it safer and greener for better future of ASEAN.
The sustainable mobility concept is fundamental to “Affordable Safety” concept development released by ASEAN NCAP in August 2014 at their 1st ASEAN Automobile Safety Forum. In principal, the concept will ensure that even the cheapest car will comply with ASEAN NCAP basic requirements. “Although 5-Star is dreamable, 4-Star is not a bad number for a start,” added him.
Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon, Chairman of ASEAN NCAP, supported the statement by saying that in future, consumers will accept nothing less than 5-Star. Hence, its requirement must be topmost. The new release of ASEAN NCAP Roadmap 2017–2020 will ensure that ASEAN NCAP achieves its target to be the most influential organization in the region by guiding manufacturers to keep producing safer cars in the future. Currently, the most affordable car in Malaysia comes with 4-Star ASEAN NCAP safety rating.
“Affordable Safety” is not just a necessity. It will be the key to sustainability of effective mobility in developing countries and emerging markets such as ASEAN.
