Mosquito is an insect which is under order Diptera, family Culicidae. Mosquito can be found in all over the world. Now, more than 3000 species of mosquitoes from 34 genera has been discovered and identified. They can survive in different kind of habitats, such as fresh water and brackish water (mixture of river water and seawater in estuaries), except water with high salinity. Genera Anopheles, Culex and Aedes can be found easily in Sabah, Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia. Mosquito is a complete metamorphosis insect. The mosquito has four different stages in its life cycle: egg, larva, pupa, and imago. Some species of mosquitoes, the eggs of mosquito are laid on the surface of water while some species of mosquitoes, the eggs are deposited on moist soil or floated objects on the water. Generally the mosquito eggs will be hatch into larvae within 48 hours (depend on mosquito species). The mosquito larvae must undergo 4 instars before entering into pupal stage. When the pupal development is complete, the pupal skin will begin to splits and the imago will emerges. There are 4 common mosquitoes species act as pests for human, which are Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti, Anopheles spp. and Culex spp.
Aedes albopictus

Ae. albopictus was discovered by Frederic Arthur Askew Skuse in 1894 at Calcutta, India. It also named as Asian tiger mosquito because normally it found in Asian and it has white and black striped appearance on its body. It has a silver line on the thorax region make it easier to differentiate from other mosquitoes. It is a type of outdoor mosquitoes and an adult mosquito can survives for four to five weeks. It is a vector for yellow fever virus, dengue fever, and Chikungunya fever.
Aedes Aegypti

Ae. aegypti mosquito is a type of mosquito which mainly live and breed indoor. Same like Ae. albopictus, it can survives for four to five weeks. It has two silver curve lines and two silver straight lines on the thorax region. Ae. aegypti mosquito is a vector for many kind of diseases such as dengue fever, chikungunya, Zika fever and yellow fever viruses.
Anopheles spp.

Anopheles mosquitoes can be found mostly at outdoor. They breed in fresh or brackish stagnant water. They can be differentiate from other mosquitoes by the palps. Their palps are as long as the proboscis. Besides that, adult Anopheles can also be identified by their resting position. They rest with their abdomens sticking up in the air rather than parallel to the surface on which they are resting. Anopheles mosquito is a vector for malaria and filariasis.
Culex spp.

Culex mosquitoes can be found at indoor and outdoor. They prefer breed in the polluted water. Unlike Aedes and Anopheles mosquitoes, Culex mosquitoes prefer bite at night time rather than dusk and dawn time. They have a white band present on the middle of proboscis. Culex mosquito is a vector for Japanese encephalitis virus, West Nile virus, filariasis and etc.

Behavior
Although mosquitoes are good flier, they cannot travel too far. They only can travel about two to five kilometer from their habitat. Mosquitoes are attracted to body odour, heat and carbon dioxide concentration. Some mosquito species such as Anopheles spp. prefer biting animals such as cows compared to human. Only female mosquitoes suck on blood, they need to take blood meal to develop their eggs, male mosquitoes feed on tree saps and nectar. The peak period of mosquitoes biting time are 5-7am and 5-7pm.
