Ant is an important household pest in SE Asia region. It is a holometabolous insect and it is under order Hymenoptera, family Formicidae. There are three common household ants: ghost ants, crazy ants and pharaoh ants.

There are two species of ants named as ghost ants, Tapinoma melanocephalum and Tapinoma indicum. Ghost ants are outdoor ants, but they can nesting indoor. They have a dark or grey head part and a transparent abdomen part.  They emit a rotten coconut smell when crushed. They prefer sugar-type gel / liquid formulated food.

Pharaoh ants

Pharaoh ant is a type of indoor ants but may nested outdoor in the tropics. They are yellowish-brown in colour. They prefer protein based or oil based liquid formulated food. They maybe budding when disturbed with household insecticides.

Crazy ants

There are two types of crazy ants, black crazy ants (Paratrechina longicornis) and yellow crazy ants (Anoplolepis gracilipes). Crazy ants are outdoor ants, but they often foraging for food indoor. They have 3 pairs of long legs and have two colours. When they are disturbed, they will run erratically. They prefer sugar-type gel / liquid formulated food.
